Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has reveal the tense and complicate relationship between him and Erik ten Hag and insists he was exile by the Dutchman.

The French defender has revealed he had serious talks with the former Red Devils boss before disappearing for no reason between October and December 2023.

“It’s hard to find the right words, it was very stressful at times,” Varane said.

“Sometimes he tries to listen to the players’ feedback. Sometimes he makes decisions without listening to the players’ feelings. So it’s ups and downs. Sometimes it’s complicate.”

While Varane admitted his problems with the Dutchman were not as serious as those with some of his former team-mates, the 31-year-old has opened up about his meeting with the manager, who refused to explain to him why he had been out of the team for so long.

“We had serious talks,” he added.

“We told each other some truths, but then I didn’t play for almost two months,”

“I said I didn’t agree with some of the ways things were done, with his relationship with the team. It wasn’t something I thought was good for the team, because some players weren’t happy with it. It wasn’t good in terms of the relationship with the coach.”

The Dutchman eventually kept his job for at least another few months after winning the FA Cup, but Varane believes it was a mistake and is surprise Ten Hag has manage to get away with it.
